The Challenge of Leaving No One Behind: Securing Political Commitment for Inclusive Development
Date: 12 Dec 2017
- Time: 16:30-18:00
- Location: Library Events Room (B-135), Palais des Nations, Geneva
- Counterpart(s): Effective States and Inclusive Development Research Centre, University of Manchester; UNOG Library
- Project Title: UNRISD Seminar Series
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals are praised for their greater ambition compared to the MDGs, and the comparatively inclusive process of designing global goals for all countries and for all people.
Yet there are critical voices as well, questioning the feasibility and scope of the SDGs and pointing to the limited concrete progress, thus far, in raising the financial resources and the political will required to meet the lofty objectives. This panel discussion will focus on the politics of inclusive development, and what this means for achievement of the SDGs and routes to social justice more broadly.
The Seminar will be followed by a reception.
It is preceded by a workshop on Political Drivers of Transformative and Inclusive Development: Examples from Social Policy and Gender-Egalitarian Reforms.
Moderator: Paul Ladd, Director, UNRISD

Policy Innovations for Transformative Change: Implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Katja Hujo, coordinator and lead author. (UNRISD, 2016)
The Flagship Report helps unpack the complexities of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, focusing on innovations and pathways to policy change, and analysing which policies and practices lead to social, economic and ecological justice. Drawing on numerous policy innovations from the South, the report goes beyond buzzwords and brings to the development community a definition of transformation that can be used as a benchmark for policy making toward the 2030 Agenda, intended to “leave no one behind”.
